Flower Craft

Many artists have used the subject of flowers to practice their skills. Flower crafts are no different. There are so many beautiful paintings of floral. Young or old and in between will agree that flowers are colorful and brighten most people’s day. Rather then painting flat flowers, here is a flower craft that is more dimensional.

For some reason my daughter wanted to make flowers on this particular day. If you have ever had to plant several plants at once into a yard, then you know it is a lot of work. So we had to dig a lot of holes. It was a lot of holes. My daughter wanted to help. We dug the holes after it had rained a great deal. Therefore the ground was super muddy and to some extent we sank in it and the rocks were atrocious.

Despite rocks and covered in mud, everything gets planted. Now it is summer and the flower colors are wondrous out the window of our studio. In view of the real flowers, we constructed our own flower craft indoors.

Do you have recycling bins? It is such a discovery to find and construct new ideas and art from rooting around in them. In the last six months we have had make believe store shelves stacked from food product boxes, swords designed from delivery boxes, flying crafts developed and secured with paper mache’ paste. You too can combine these soon to be tossed items into something new. Like this flower craft.

Art from recycling

Egg cartons are very versatile as building blocks for three dimensional forms. Cut the egg carton a part. Choose some paint colors. Tempera and glitter paint work well. Markers may be a less messy option. Depending on age flowers may result in muddled colors or in clean applications. Either way the child and parent are enjoying time together.

Egg cartons and tissue paper

As mentioned egg cartons are wonderful to work with, but tissue paper has many uses as well. It is versatile as well in its use. When I was younger, I took bread or trash bag ties with regular facial tissue and made all kinds of white tissue flowers. Accordion fold, twist, and cut the edges of the tissue to make a bouquet. Producing these flowers with children is so wonderful because we expose our children to what we learned as children.

A pipe cleaner or fuzzy stick was used for the stem on the tissue paper flower.
