No Sharks with Hearts on Valentine’s Day Cards

It is Valentine’s Day!

Today is Valentine’s Day.  Four years ago my son was in kindergarten. Along with entrance into kindergarten came all the school parties. Store bought cards were out of the question for these celebrations.  So, I got to business, drawing several images.  My son enjoys reptiles and sharks.  Of course, I focused on sharks with hearts for Valentine’s Day.  I designed and drew three different images of sharks with hearts.  These sharks with hearts for Valentine’s Day cards were very fun drawings. But they were not my son’s work. He had to make them.  So there were not sharks with hearts for Valentine’s Day this year. The results were a cut and paste process.  Thankfully, he only needed about 10 cards.

We did turtles and snakes.

To have him make his own cards required some mommy assistance. We cut and folded paper. I drew the beginning images. Then he glued small paper hearts into place to make the cards. The cards turned out well and my son signed all them.

Now I really liked my sharks with hearts for Valentine’s day and drew some more sharks for the Christmas card exchange, but we did not use them.

Along came my daughter this year.

My daughter spied the finger-printing book that I picked up from a book exchange. Now my first grade daughter is not all about shark with hearts for Valentine’s Day. Instead she is about rainbows, flowers, and balloons. So we got to business making her Valentine’s day cards with finger-prints. For some unknown reason she specified that the boys in her class do not like hearts and that they get balloons.

What we did:

  • fold and cut paper for cards
  • moisten watercolor paint
  • rubbed finger tip in paint
  • pressed the painted finger on the paper
  • let if dry
  • use thin sharpie to add details
  • enhance with colored pencils

It was a lot faster then the kindergarten cards that I assemble lined with my son in kindergarten. In the end no sharks with hearts for Valentine’s Day were shared. However, I wonder if others would enjoy these sharks with hearts for Valentine’s days.
